The Hannah Rose Foundation

Shaken Baby Syndrome

1,200 and 1,600 children die every year in the United States from SBS. The Hannah Rose Foundation was formed to raise money to educate people about the fatal consequences of shaking your baby. It is our mission in life to prevent this from ever happening again to any child!

SB 468

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Dear Friends,

We wanted to let you know that the first Bill associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome has passed through the California Senate last week. I was asked to speak to many legislators from around the state regarding the need for Hospital based programs. We are pleased with the efforts of many in honoring Hannah Rose. The Bill known as SB 468 is allocating funds for 10 counties. The hospitals in these counties will start distributing Shaken Baby Syndrome materials consistent with the New York based model that has proven to decrease the numbers of children Shaken each year. We are learning to live with the harsh reality that this is our life now. We are very appreciative of your support. We will continue to update you on the progress of the Bill now on the way to the State Assembly for the same vote. The Sacramento Child Abuse Prevention Center has been instrumental in the passing of this very important legislation. Thank you.

Hannah Memorial Friday, May 11th

Monday, May 7th, 2007

Dear Friends,

We are now entering a very tough time as you can imagine. The year went by faster then ever and we are no closer to a resolution regarding the criminal proceedings with our sitter. We at times feel like it’s been an eternity. We look for what we call “bits of joy” to keep us moving forward on the road of life. We would like you to please join us at a memorial we are having for Hannah Friday May 11th 2007 at the Chapel where Hannah is.

The East Lawn Mortuary is located 5757 Greenback Lane Sacramento Ca 95841

The memorial will be Friday 7 pm May 11th in the Chapel where the original service took place. We are requesting our friends and family to be there with us to reflect on Hannah’s life and our mission to honor her and further her legacy.
If you would like to bring a friend or neighbor we are perfectly ok with that. I would love to have as many people as possible to show Hannah we are all there for her. If you have any ideas to make this special please email us right away.

The service will be very short proceeded by a walk to the site where Hannah is located. We thought it would be great if everyone brought a single rose to place at the site. If you can please bring a rose with you.

Sincerely,

Scott,Lorena,Jordan and Benjamin Juceam

Legislation would establish health campaign to prevent form of child abuse

April 25, 2007

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a senior member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, and the Chairman of its Children and Families Subcommittee, today introduced the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act of 2007. Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) describes the trauma resulting from the violent shaking or abusive impact to the head of an infant or young child. SBS is a form of child abuse affecting between 1,200 and 1,600 children every year, of which between one-quarter and one-third will die and another one-third will suffer permanent, severe disabilities. Senator Dodd’s legislation would establish a national public health campaign to raise awareness about SBS, encourage prevention programs and provide preventative support for parents and caregivers, and provide support to families affected by abusive head trauma incidents. Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

“Young children are America’s most vulnerable citizens, and it is our responsibility to do everything in our power to protect them,” said Dodd. “Shaken Baby Syndrome is completely preventable, and I am hopeful that by educating parents, caregivers and the general public about the dangers of shaking a child, we will be able to eliminate this form of cruel and senseless abuse from our society.”

“Shaken Baby Syndrome tears apart families and impacts the lives of thousands of young children each year,” Lowey said. “However, with better education for parents and other caregivers, we can dramatically curb this horrible form of abuse.”

Dodd’s legislation has been endorsed by more than 40 organizations including Prevent Child Abuse America, the National Child Abuse Coalition, the American Psychological Association, the Children’s Defense Fund, the National Association of Children’s Hospitals, and the Child Welfare League of America.

From left, Pat and Debbie Boyd, Lynette and Don Vanderschoot and Scott Juceam share one thing in common — they’ve all lost a daughter to tragedy. The families, along with law enforcement officials and friends, came together April 21 to raise money for Placer County programs. Courtesy PhotoDon and Lynette Vanderschoot’s youngest daughter was murdered more than three years ago. They held a dinner in her memory April 21 at Auburn’s Gold Country Fairgrounds to benefit those who helped solve their daughter’s murder.

The body of 17-year-old Justine Vanderschoot, of Christian Valley, was found in a shallow grave in September 2003. Her murderers, her boyfriend and his best friend, are both serving lengthy prison terms.

Saturday night at the Gold Country Fairgrounds was all about the Auburn community coming together, raising funds and honoring Justine’s memory.

“So many people in the community and Sheriff’s Department were supportive while we were searching for Justine and we just wanted to be able to give something back to them,” Don Vanderschoot said.

More than 350 supporters, many dressed in red in keeping with the theme “Cherries from Heaven,” dined on roast chicken, tri-tip and sautéed green beans, all prepared by volunteers and donated by Raley’s and Bel Air grocery stores in Auburn.

Debbie and Pat Boyd, whose daughter Christie Wilson, 27, of Sacramento, was killed in 2005 by Mario Garcia, of Auburn, made the drive from San Jose to join forces with the Vanderschoot family.

Debbie Boyd said she felt some sense of comfort in seeing the Placer County officials that helped put her daughter’s murderer in prison.

Scott Juceam, whose daughter Hannah Rose, was reportedly shaken to death by her nanny Veronica Salcedo May 11, 2006, was guest speaker at the event.

Friends of Lynette Vanderschoot came from as far away as Fresno for the dinner event.

Proceeds from Saturday’s event will go to support various programs of the Placer County Sheriff’s Department.

Justine Vanderschoot was only 17 years old when her parents reported her missing following a family Labor Day dinner in September 2003. After weeks of searching for the missing Maidu High School student, police arrested Brandon Fernandez and Danny Bezemer Sept. 17, 2003.

FBI investigators questioned Fernandez, who eventually led them to a remote spot in Applegate to where Justine Vanderschoot’s gravesite was found.

Bezemer, 21, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, and is serving a prison sentence of 25-years-to-life. Fernandez, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for his part in Justine’s murder and is serving a 15-year-to-life prison sentence.

1st week of the trial is now over …

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

Dear Friends,

The first official week of the trial has now concluded. The Jury will be chosen out of hundreds that were called and questioned. It has been tough but we have done well compared to the first trial. The defense is no doubt up to their tactics to deflect the truth with “smoke and mirrors”. The district atty’s are very well prepared and have big surprises for the defense that will put them in their place. Our daughter would be proud of the work being done on her behalf. We have wonderful support and great friends that have been there for our family.

Meeting with the Governor

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Dear Friends,

Our meeting with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger showed his commitment to helping Lorena and I with future ideas to help reduce violent crimes from ever occurring in the first place. Prevention is the key to most violence that strikes without warning. Please help all of us raise funds and spread the word about the Fight of Abuses against Children and Raise the awareness regarding Shaken Baby Syndrome. We are making an impact in the area of awareness regarding Hannah and we are now going to trial in August just 120 days from now. As you are all aware we are almost at 1 year from when Hannah died. We do believe somehow we are going to make a difference when it comes to this issue.

Our sorrow and pain has never lessened through the year but our resolve and mission has grown to new lengths. We look to the other parents who have had terrible loss as the loss of losing a child to a violent crime. We are doing the very best to create a legacy for our beautiful daughter Hannah Rose. We have started the Hannah Rose Foundation to specifically Let the world know about Shaken Baby Syndrome and Hannah Juceam. We are so appreciative for all of the support you have given. We could not have gotten to this point without all of our friends and family. We love all of you for that.

Through Billboards, Hospital Prevention Programs, State legislation and Federal Legislation we are are aiding those who have been working for years to protect our kids from being abused or killed. We have started lobbying for the Hannah Rose Prevention Act of 2007-2008. The state legislation is developing narrow laws regarding Shaken Baby Syndrome. Lorena and and I have met with many many law makers talking about our situation. The more people know the better chance our community will have to stop adults from Shaking Babies. Through the Federal law that has a number of HR 6070 and transforming into a new law as we speak. The federal law would mandate funds to the prevention programs that educate new parents while still at the hospital. The federal government will allocate approximately five million dollars to the advancement of Shaken Baby Syndrome awareness. Please help us and write your federal legislators that you support our efforts and want to create laws against Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Thank you so much,

Scott, Lorena, Jordan and little Ben Juceam
